ACRES Founder Dr. Greg Koski speaks about some of the foundational ideas behind ACRES. He describes his first experience on an IRB, early steps toward a focus bon research ethics and his agenda as the first director of OHRP.
Dr. Greg Koski is a distinguished figure in the fields of biochemical pharmacology, anesthesiology, critical care medicine, and research ethics. He has had a long and impactful career at Harvard, where he served as an Associate Professor at the Harvard Medical School in the Department of Anesthesiology and Critical Care at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH). His tenure at Harvard spanned nearly five decades, during which he was actively involved in basic research, clinical investigation, teaching, administration, and patient care.
Dr. Koski's commitment to research ethics is evident through his significant contributions to the field. He was appointed as the first Director of the Office for Human Research Protections (OHRP) within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS). In this role, he led efforts to protect human subjects in biomedical and behavioral research, providing leadership for all federal agencies funding such research at universities, research centers and corporations across the country and around the world. His work at OHRP (Office for Human Research Protections) was instrumental in heightening oversight of biomedical research and reinforcing the responsibilities of research participants, clinical investigators, research institutions, and sponsors to benefit all. His career is marked by his unwavering dedication to advancing medical research and ensuring the ethical conduct of research involving human participants, making him a respected leader in his field.
A member of the ACRES leadership team, Whalen is also Co-Founder and serves as Executive Secretary for the Board of Directors. He has co-founded two companies as well as another non-profit. His career has included executive development and coaching; and service on University faculties in Humanities, Honors, and Business departments. Publications in peer-reviewed journals over 30 years span topics of challenges of the global Life Sciences enterprise and organization social responsibility. He has also served in leadership roles for Professional Societies and Editorial Boards.
Mary F. Tobin, Ph.D., is ACRES’ Chief Strategy Officer and the Special Advisor to the President. She leads strategy, development of the Synergy Forum, planning, education in systems thinking, and business development. Formerly, she directed the ACRES Patient Engagement Initiative. She also supports communications, international and domestic cultural competency, and stakeholder engagement.
As Managing Director of IMPACT LLC, Dr.Tobin oversees consulting projects for private, nonprofit, and federal biomedical organizations. Her work encompasses bringing clinical trial operations and outcomes into alignment with the diversity of the general population, assessing international research landscapes, and providing tools for organizational effectiveness. She has also contributed to U.S. government efforts to repurpose former Soviet bio-weapons facilities for clinical research.
